Senior Citizens Handicapped Government Assistance?
Jessie asked:
My Grandparents have recently purchased their own home in West Plains, MO. They are both in their seventy’s and my grandmother has had back surgery and finds it hard to get around. While shes not in a wheelchair she is bad enough to be considered hanicapped, and has the special parking ticket and everything. In thier new home they are wanting to remodel the bathroom to make it handicapped excessible for my grandmother because its very hard for her as it is. They are however both on social security and can’t afford the remodeling. My question is, is there some kind of government grant, or program, possibly within the social security or medicare or something that would help pay with insurance and everything so that they could afford the renovations. They have asked me to help them find some information and so far i have come up empty. Does anyone know if they can get government assistance or at least where i could look to get more info
Thanks

My sister had some renovations done to her house to insulate it better. I think it was done through the State government though, not Federal. I would call and ask Social Services in your county.
Try Woodsmen of the World.
Also try churches near them, asking if they have outreach programs for seniors needing home improvement.
Also call their county Department of Families and Children. [DFCS] Ask whether they have access to such programs or can refer you.
Also try United Way.
She would get the help if she was in the UK.
They could take out a home loan for remodeling. That is what people do who own homes. No government assistance on that. You have to look around your community for charities to find out if any local businesses give discounts for remodeling. Only private social service organizations might lend financial help if they are low income. If they have Medicaid, they should call their case worker and ask her about help to pay for a disabled bathroom. I thought most people did not agree with government assistance these days.
My sister is handicapped and she told me of a program called FHA—Federal Housing
Assistance. They have loans with 1% interest and the payments are very low.
If the new home purchased by your grandparents is paid for, they will not have any problems getting
a home equity loan at low interest to fix up a new bathroom. If they are living on Social Security why did they put all of their money into a house knowing it would need some renovations. If everyone asked the Govt. for a new bathroom we in the US would truly be in the toilet.
Good luck.
