why do people assume that those on government assistance don’t work?

linz_b asked:

i have read many questions here where people are asking for advice on how to go about applying for welfare, food stamps, medicaid, etc. a lot of times i have been appalled to read the hateful responses telling them to “get a job.” a great deal of these people DO work, but just can’t make ends meet. what’s the deal with attacking someone for using the system for what it was intended?

ok, i know i have done this… But i’ve only told this one chick who added me on here and on myspace. She is too young, hasn’t fnish high school, and wants to get prego. Come on, i dont feel like paying for someone trying to act grown and can’t take care of theirs when the baby is born.

I can understand if it’s people who are working hard, two-three jobs and can not make ends meet. Because of the economy has gone down the drain. thanks George Bush! But back to the topic at hand, yeah i’ve done this but it’s only to these young kids acting like it’s cool to have a baby and can’t support the child. Then, they look for the state to help them take care of the child.

A lot of people assume that those getting any form of assistance are just lazy and dont have jobs, which there are but there is always two sides to the story. People like that are out there but then there are also those struggling to pay bills and put food on the table who really deserve the extra help.

For the most part if the person asking the question seems genuinely asking about the services and not asking because they want to have a baby. ..or something stupid then okay. But all I have seen on here is kids wanting kids and asking if they can get into these programs and blahzay blah. The services were intended to help people not to get taken advantage of. I can see how some are mad because its our money going into that every paycheck.

    Thank you
I have asked questions on here asking about what help they will give me for school so I can get a job and get off welfare and I get rude response calling me lazy and to get a job…like hello thats what I said.
I am on welfare, single mom in college (for nursing) with a 4.0 gpa. I am in the process of getting my Phlebotomy license so I can get a job that pays enough to work part time and go to school. Yes, that means I am working on my internship at a hospital, going to school full time and taking care of a baby all by myself. But some how I am lazy right? People are so judgemental and don’t take the time to listen to anything past “I am on welfare”
Take a look at some of my questions on welfare and you will see what I mean
