Is it shameful to be on government assistance? 33 weeks pregnant?

Baby Chris is here! asked:

Basically my situation isnt the best, im on foodstamps, wic, and medical. Im also attending school full time working on my BA in sociology and psychology. Im 20 years old. Im getting alot of criticism lately for being immature for being on government aid and lately people have been telling me i should drop out of school and get a job. I simply respond that the whole purpose im going to school is to get a better job after i graduate in 3 years! If there is a job for 50,000 a year with benefits available to someone with hardly any experience sign me up! But there isnt any. Im even applying for TANF cash assistance since the father is not involved and right now all im living on is unemployment and student aide. So really is there shame in what im doing? Am i milking the government? Why does everyone give me so much crap? Also i am due jan 25 so next term i am going half time and i have all the details worked out. So why is everybody kicking dirt at me?

if you cant afford children, you shouldnt have them. i shouldnt have to pay for your child.

so i guess people think that i should be paying for your child. what your doing is not ok. if you wanted to go to college and persue your dreams you shouldnt have decided to have a baby. im assuming that you knew before you got pregnant that you werent financially stable enough to have a child. its not anyones reasponsiblity to pay for your kid so that you can finish school. i think that people who do that are taking advantage of the system and its not fair to the people who have JOBS and work for their own money.

do you plan on paying the tax payers back when you finish school

I don’t see shame in getting government assistance unless you keep doing it for more than a few months, using the government for your support for years is not okay. I do not understand why you are choosing to bring a child into the world when you can’t provide for it, and the taxpayers don’t really want to, but it is not shameful if you honestly need short-term assistance, but the US citizens don’t want to pay out the nose for your baby and the choices you made while you spend your own money to pursue what you want instead of what you have to do to provide for the baby.

Keep working on that degree! Don’t give up. That little piece of paper will make up for all your struggles and you won’t need any assistance when you’re done.

    Good luck!

I don’t think its right to be on it for years and years but if you are trying to better yourself then I think it is perfectly fine! Life doesn’t always go as planned and think your plan sounds great. Just do the best you can and don;t let people get to you. You have to do what you have to do for you and your baby :)
    Good Luck.

There is nothing wrong with accepting assistance when you need it.

You are going to school to better yourself.. its not like you are planning to stay on that assistance.. at some point you will have a good paying job and you will be paying social security and tax dollars that go right back into the sytem that helped you to begin with!

I know a few women out there that REFUSE to work and live off the government. You are going to school to get a better job so you can support your kid. You deserve the help, those women who won’t work don’t !!!!

no! you are okay! Ha! Im on all of the same and don’t feel bad at all! If we qualify go ahead and grab those benefits!! It’s fine. However, you don’t have to broadcast all of the assistance you get! Keep it hush hush. Who really needs to know?

I don’t think it’s bad to be on assistance as long as you’re trying to better yourself so that you won’t always need it. I think it’s wrong for people to use it and decide to stay on it, but not try to improve their situation to get themselves off of it. Hope this helps.

MANY students live on student loans, and gov aid while in school. As long as its temporary, it is okay. That is what government assistance is for isn’t it? Temp assistance?

They’re kicking dirt at you because they can. Learn to ignore it because all your life there will be at least one person looking to kick dirt at you whenever they can.

Good for you for finishing school, you are going to need that degree later.

EDIT- You graduate in 3 years? Okay so you’ll have a good 40+ years to pay the government back through your taxes. You’ll pay it back several times over, don’t sweat it.

i dont believe its wrong or shameful at all. you deserve the help because your attempting to do well, with school and all. plus your on your own trying to make the best for your child, which is more than a lot of people can say. the complainers are
